[ He's led to his bedroom, for all intents and purposes, and lingers a little bit, eyeing Akechi. ]

Feel free to sit down.

[ The futon is available, at least, and Morgana seems to be staying at Futaba's while the rain remains, which makes it truly only the two of them- first time in a long while, he thinks.

At the very least, he'll take initiative and sit on the futon himself, motioning Akechi to join him. ]

Morgana's out for the night. So it's just the two of us.

[If anything, this whole situation just proved how out of his element he was right now. It was just so bizarre and every part of him wanted to keep resisting as he always had. For now though, he'll go along with it, awkwardly taking a seat next to him.]

I see...

[Glancing around the room for something to comment about. he'd been here before of course, but not for the sole purpose of visiting. He took in the details of the room more observantly than before. He didn't really care before and the others had been here the other times.]

It seems you've adjusted to living here.

I've grown pretty fond of the place. It's quaint.

[ Who knew he would become so attached to this janky little loft. Attic trash, Akechi once called him. But it's due to everything that's happened that can make him remember that in a fond light, despite everything. The important thing is he's changed now. ]

Are you adjusting well...? To life.

[justcawse]

[Ah yes. The eternal struggle of a pathological liar. He could just speak truthfully since Ren would know he was bullshitting anyway. On the other hand, when you live a lie for so long, it was hard to stop. Every instinct in him was dialing back to what he knew best and yet... What good would that do him...? He'd already come this far. Was it even worth trying to fake it until he made it with someone who knew him well enough?

Letting out a sigh with all of that running through his mind..]

I don't even know where to begin.

[That was.... brutally honest considering what he was like normally.]

We've got all night.

[ The rain isn't going to let up anytime soon, that he knows for sure. He leans back against the futon, glancing over in Akechi's position. ]

Let's start with this, then: do you think it's too late for us. [ He shifts a little on the seat. ] To be friends.

[justcawse]

[That.... wasn't quite what he was getting at, but it was a change in topic for the time being. Cupping his chin into his left hand, he sighed.]

You already know how I feel about... friends..

[He was stubborn, but he wasn't going off the rails about this at the very least.]

I'm better off on my own.

[That definitely wasn't true right now and the loneliness inside him was making that damn clear. How do you let people into your life after so long though?]

That was then, and this is now.

[ It would be strange for him to consider themselves anything besides friends, when he's holed up in the same place Ren lives, in his bedroom, sitting with him in close proximity. But he lets Akechi consider them whatever he needs them to be, if only to sate his stubbornness. ]

You don't have to be, you know. This can change. They have changed. I don't want it to be too late for us.

['I don't want it to be too late for us' stuck in his mind for some reason. He was just so used to being that unwanted child who had to live as someone else just to get people to like him. While it's true he hadn't really had anyone truly, honestly give a damn about him before, there was Ren. He'd always been different from everyone else. There was just something about him that drew Akechi to him for some reason. If this was anybody else, he would have left a long time ago, so what was keeping him here now?]

I... don't know. My entire life has been for nothing up until now and I was a damn fool for not realizing it sooner. Some detective I turned out to be.

[Ah, yep. There's that self-pity. He wasn't taking his near death well. He had no idea how to start healing and moving on when all of it was a lie in the end. He'd lived how everyone would want him to be like, and yet at this point he had no idea what was really him or what wasn't anymore.]

You make it sound like it's so easy to turn everything around.

[ And likewise, Ren considers Akechi different from all the people he's had connections with as well. He's his antithesis; the one person who stood up against his own beliefs, but also remained at his side through it all. There was an agenda, Ren understands this well because it was his life they were dangling on a line, but still- he feels something real there through the thick of it all.

He can only imagine how Akechi feels. Having his entire life purpose stripped from him and live to tell the tale is- punishing, to say the least. ]

And you make it sound like it's too late. I don't think it is- we're both still young.

[ After all, they're almost the same age. Akechi is a year older, but that means he still has his whole life ahead of him. ]

You can start over. Find something else to invest in. And- we can remain friends.

[justcawse]

Isn't it though? I shouldn't even be alive right now.

[Why was he still alive anyway? Part of him is thankful of course, but part of him wishes that he had just died back then after being stuck with so much to reconsider about his life. What good would it do to mull over the past when it was obviously a failure? He was smarter than to relive the same life that brought him ruin in the first place, but that was easier said than done to let go.]

This whole time you thought of us as friends, meanwhile I'd only looked out for myself. I don't get you... [But there doesn't seem to be much resistance in that.] I don't even know who I really am at this point.

But you are, [ He protests. Akechi is in fact alive and breathing right now, and seated right next to him. This isn't months ago when he'd have believed the same. The fact that Akechi insists that he should be dead doesnt't sit well with him at all, and he shifts uncomfortably in his seat, facing him fully. ]

You don't have to worry about all that. I understood what I was getting into when I got involved with you. I respect your journey, even though I don't agree with your methods.

[ Killing people, for example. But he also understands that Akechi couldn't have possibly known that there's a way for him to achieve his goals without killing people. He hadn't known about it until the Phantom Thieves came along anyway. ]

Let's fix that. We can help you find yourself again.

....And my paid finally ran out on his rofl

[He wanted to protest. He wanted to keep fighting his advances. But he was tired. He was tired of having to pretend to be okay in the public face that his life wasn't in shambles. He was tired of having to work with someone that he despised for the sake of a justice that would never become reality. He was tired of fighting to be the best he could be just to make people want him around.

He was broken and even after all this time of thinking, he still had no idea how to cope with his crushing failures and constant reminders of how he'd never had a chance to begin with. This world was cruel. People were cruel. And yet sat someone next to him that legitimately wanted him around, despite knowing all of the bad things that he had done.

He was tired of fighting. He was silent for a few minutes before responding finally.]

......... Do whatever you want...

[Was it because he was finally letting himself acknowledge that he was lonely or because he simply didn't have the energy to deny it anymore? Probably a little bit of both.]

[prison]

[ It was a deafening silence that befell the room, save for the downpour of rain and thunder just beyond the walls. He lets the room drown in it for a moment, little his own words settle in Akechi's mind. Ren knows it's not enough to turn anything around- even if Ren forgives him, it doesn't mean that Akechi forgives himself. And he's here to assure that Akechi doesn't need to pretend around him, especially when he's seen his true face.

Ren turns to Akechi seriously, and after a moment of consideration: ]

All right, then I want you to stay the night.

[justcawse]

[Just when Akechi thought he knew Ren well enough, he always seemed to catch him off guard.]

E-Excuse me?! [Did he really just...?] Is this supposed to be a sleepover now?

[He's trying to pretend everything is fine again -- a bad habit really -- but it's clear that he wasn't expecting Ren to say that.]
